The AAFP seeks to raise the standards of feline medicine and surgery among practitioners by sharing knowledge, rewarding advancement in research, sponsoring continuing education, supporting American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) certification in the Feline Practice category, and encouraging veterinary student interest in feline practice.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In the continued pursuit of excellence in feline medicine, the Fellow Membership, a special category of membership in the American Association of Feline Practitioners, will work to provide the following: 

  1. An advanced level of feline continuing education.

  2. Facilitation of networking and sharing of information among Fellows including monthly online discussions, annual luncheons, poster presentations, and informal “table topic” debates.

  3. Promotion of feline research by collaboration between practitioners, academia and
    industry; positioning fellows as a resource for research projects.

  4. Contribute to the development of  recommendations for feline practice.

  5. Encourage and assist in the pursuit of ABVP feline certification.

REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Successful applicants must possess a specific interest in feline medicine/surgery with a significant portion of professional activities to be devoted to practice, teaching, or research in the field of feline medicine and surgery. 

  2. Successful applicants must have a DVM from an accredited school of veterinary medicine and have completed a minimum of 5 years in active clinical practice, be it in private practice or at an educational institution.

  3.  Successful applicants must be an active member, in good standing, in the AAFP for at least the 3 years immediately prior to application.

  4. Successful applicants must have completed 36 hours of Continuing Education of which 30 hours are feline exclusive, in the year prior to application. Applicants must have attended one AAFP meeting in the year prior to application. 

  5. Successful applicants must prepare and submit a paper, which can be a literature review, a case report, a presentation of an interesting observation from their experiences, or similar. The purpose of the paper is to support our mission of the sharing of knowledge and the development of camaraderie among Fellow feline veterinarians.

  6.  Applicants who are Diplomats of an ABVS recognized specialty, or those that are eligible to sit the examination for that specialty, may submit a paper they have previously created for that purpose in order to fulfill requirement # 5. 

  7.  The applicant must submit with his or her application Fifty Dollars ($50.00), the cost to upgrade to Fellow Member Status (Annual Dues for Fellow Members are $210 verses General Member fees of $160.  If Annual Membership dues have not yet been paid to date please send $210 with the Fellow Member Application).  The annual membership renewal anniversary will be January 1 of each year.

REQUIREMENTS TO RETAIN FELLOW STATUS 

  1. Fellows must attend an AAFP meeting, including Fellows Day, every 2 years. 

  2. Fellows must attend 72 hours of CE every 2 years of which 60 hours must be feline exclusive. 

  3. For the first three years following successful application, there will be no exception to the feline only rule on CE. Following the third year, a specialty course will be accepted as long as felines are a significant component of the content. Examples of specialty CE which would be considered includes endoscopy, laparoscopy, dentistry – advanced techniques, and ultrasound. 

  4. Fellows must participate at least every two years. Examples of participation include, but are not limited to, a case presentation on listserv or in the newsletter, poster presentation at Fellows day, or participation on an AAFP committee. Other activities may be considered but should be submitted to the Fellow Representatives to determine their suitability. Fellow members who are currently serving on the board of directors are exempt from these requirements for the duration of their terms of service.

  5. Members who are currently on the faculty of a veterinary teaching institution are exempt from the CE volume requirement but not the attendance at an AAFP meeting requirement every 2 years. They are also exempt from the participation requirement.

  6. Pay the annual Fellow membership fee.

Incomplete applications will be returned to the Applicant for completion.
