Dr. Jim Richards, a friend and leader for feline
practitioners around the world, was killed in a motorcycle accident
that occurred the afternoon of Sunday, April 22, 2007. Jim touched so many
lives in so many positive ways. We
miss him dearly.

AVMA Announces
Official Veterinary Reporting Tool for Pet Food-Induced Nephrotoxicosis
The American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD)
and the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has produced an official survey tool for veterinarians and
veterinary diagnostic laboratories to report suspected
cases of pet food-induced nephrotoxicosis. Veterinarians who see
suspected cases are strongly encouraged to
participate in this survey. The survey is accessible at:

Banfield sees
30% increase in kidney failure cases
http://www.vetlocator.com/newsarticles/39000_pets.php
Banfield said an
analysis of its database, compiled from records collected by its more
than 615 veterinary hospitals, suggests three out of every 10,000 cats
and dogs that ate the pet food contaminated with melamine developed
kidney failure. There are an estimated 60 million dogs and 70 million
cats in the United States, the American Veterinary Medical Association
said.
The hospital chain saw
one million dogs and cats during the three months when the more than 100
brands of now-recalled contaminated pet food were sold. It saw 284 extra
cases of kidney failure among cats during that period, or a roughly 30
percent increase, when compared with background rates.
**Join the
AAFP for the June 24th rounds with Dr. Thornhill and see how the
veterinary specialty center handled over 30 acute renal failure cases
without a single death.**
2007 AAFP Winter Conference Proceedings
Online orders for
the CD version of the Miami AAFP conference proceedings can be placed
here:
http://www.regonline.com/Checkin.asp?EventId=89266. Proceedings from
the Geriatrics and Pain Management Conference are also available, as are
limited quantities from 2004-2006 conferences.
The 2007 AAFP Winter Conference
in Miami provided an outstanding educational opportunity and a plethora of
pearls. A few nuggets of knowledge are mentioned below with
additional pearls featured in the upcoming AAFP Newsletter.
In December 2006 the
Center for Veterinary Biologics (APHIS) approved conditional license for
T-Cyte Therapeutics "Lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator" as an FeLV/FIV
treatment aid.
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/cvb/notices/2007/01.pdf and a
representative of the company (Dr. Beardsley) provided a meeting packet
insert to all in attendance:

Dr. Lauren
Trepanier
- provided great info
about dose adjustment recommendations with renal failure, obesity, liver
disease, etc.
- Right heart failure
can lead to gastrointestinal edema and cause erratic oral absorption of
some drugs.
- When vasoconstriction
is present, blood flow to SQ tissues will be poor, therefore, IV drug
administration is preferred
(if IV is not possible, then IM).
Dr. Trisha
Dowling
- provided great info
about successful antimicrobial therapy based on drug exposure and
potency data and how to interpret your culture results.
- Fluoroquinolone-associated
retinal damage in cats is a significant concern and Marbofloxacin
appears to be the safest currently approved for cats. Pradofloxacin is a
once daily liquid formulation in the approval process that takes 2
generation mutation for resistance to develop and thoroughly
investigated for ocular safety in cats.
- Corticosteroid therapy
increases urinary loss of Chromium and it was recently reported that Cr
supplementation can recover steroid-induced diabetes mellitus (100ug/cat
daily)

UPDATED RABIES VACCINATION CERTIFICATE RELEASED
http://www.nasphv.org/
(click on Documents, and then on Rabies Certificate)
An updated rabies vaccination certificate is available from
the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians. Referred to
as Form 51, the certificate is a model for use by veterinarians.
The model certificate now includes a line for a microchip
number, addition of "markings" to the predominant colors box, and a space
to provide the exact age of the pet. In addition, a box for the animal
control license duration was added, and the species list was expanded to
include ferrets. For the vaccine portion of the certificate, a check box
was added to accommodate the recent licensing of a four year-duration
vaccine. Other modifications include a line for the vaccine product name
and more space to list details about the vaccination expiration.
Dr. Ben Sun, chair of the NASPHV committee said, "It helps
to identify (vaccines) when we trace back in the event of a recall or if
an animal that was previously vaccinated developed rabies."
To download a copy of the model certificate, log on to the
association's Web site,
http://www.nasphv.org/, click on Documents, and then on Rabies
Certificate.
