MAY 2006 Here's what the AAFP has for you this month!
The American Association of Feline Practitioners supports professional growth and fellowship by providing outstanding continuing education, research and outreach programs intended to improve the health and well-being of cats.
Join us for AAFP ROUNDS on VIN... our 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!

  • May 21, 8pm ET: Tubes, Glorious Tubes- Feeding Strategies for Sick Cats. (Dr. Michele Gaspar)
  • June 25, 8pm ET: Feline Pearls from ACVIM

Sick cats commonly present with inappetance and anorexia, and syringe feeding per os rarely keeps pace with their increased caloric requirements. AAFP Rounds will discuss the systemic consequences of anorexia, the appropriateness of various feeding devices (N-G, esophagostomy, PEG, low-profile PEG and jejunostomy tubes), as well as placement techniques, calculations of caloric requirements and a review of nutritional formulas. We will review how the clinician can work with clients and veterinary staff to gain acceptance of the use of feeding tubes.

All AAFP members are invited to attend these rounds. If you still need a VIN username and password for access, please email Dr. Sherri Williams ( wileydvm@aol.com ) with the words "AAFP Rounds" in the subject heading.

AVMA NEWS

AVMA fills top two Animal Welfare Division positions
http://www.vin.com/Members/BoardsMain/Boards.plx?Read=2&B=CE&Id=169*2020*42145

AVMA survey will assess knowledge necessary for certification

The AVMA is seeking input to help develop a new version of the examination of knowledge for step 3 of the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification program.

This month, the Association will send individual e-mail messages inviting a broad representation of the profession to fill out an online survey validating knowledge statements and clinical skills for a new examination. The Association encourages veterinarians who receive an announcement to fill out the online survey, which will be accessible through a link in each e-mail invitation.

The ECFVG step 3 examination assesses the basic and clinical sciences knowledge of graduates of veterinary schools or colleges without AVMA accreditation. The acceptable knowledge level is that of new graduates of AVMA-accredited U.S. or Canadian veterinary schools or colleges.

The new examination, through developer Thomson Prometric, will replace the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination, through the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, as the ECFVG step 3 assessment tool.

The ECFVG step 3 survey will remain online until June 15. More information is available by contacting Annie Liu, AVMA testing coordinator, at ALiu@avma.org or (800) 248-2862, Ext. 6682. Information about the ECFVG program is available at www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp.
