AUGUST 2006 Here's what the AAFP has for you this month!
The American Association of Feline Practitioners supports professional growth and fellowship by providing outstanding continuing education, research and outreach programs intended to improve the health and well-being of cats.

Join us for AAFP ROUNDS on VIN
  • August 6, 8pm ET: Tubes, Glorious Tubes- Feeding Strategies for Sick Cats. (Dr. Michele Gaspar)
  • September 24, 8pm ET: Feline Hypertension (Dr. Patti Snyder)
  • October 8, 8pm ET: AAFP Student Chapters Meeting (AAFP Students, Faculty Advisors, Private Practice Mentors, Regional Directors & AAFP Membership)
  • November 5, 8pm ET: AAFP Bartonella Panel Report (Dr. Michael Lappin)

Tubes, Glorious Tubes- Feeding Strategies for Sick Cats
Sick cats commonly present with inappetance and anorexia, and syringe feeding per os can rarely keep pace with the increased caloric requirements of these patients. In this AAFP Rounds session, the systemic consequences of anorexia will be discussed, the appropriateness of various feeding devices (N-G, esophagostomy, PEG, low-profile PEG and jejunostomy tubes) will be reviewed, as well as placement techniques, calculations of caloric requirements and a review of nutritional formulas. We will review how the clinician can work with clients and veterinary staffs to gain acceptance of the use of feeding tubes.

All AAFP members are invited to attend these rounds. If you still need a VIN username and password for access, please email Dr. Sherri Williams ( wileydvm@aol.com ) with the words "AAFP Rounds" in the subject heading.

Dr. Scherk's AAFP rounds transcript for the "Snots and Snuffles" discussion and what I like to term as the blow-pop kitty video are now available in the AAFP Rounds library here: http://www.vin.com/Members/CE/C164/Library/CE_LC060709a.htm

AAFP BOARD of DIRECTORS NOMINATION BALLOT

The AAFP is pleased to announce that six esteemed colleagues have agreed to appear on the association's ballot for election to the 2006 - 2007 Board of Directors. Dr. Valerie Creighton will be running for the position of President-Elect, and Drs. Karen Miller Becnel, Fern Crist, Julie Dinnage, Anthony Nanton, and James Richards will be vying for three open positions on the Board of Directors.

President-Elect: presides at board meetings in the absence of the president and serves as co-chair of the program committee responsible for the Fall and Winter conference content. It's desirable for the nominees for president-elect to have past experience on the AAFP board or have served in a capacity such as committee/taskforce chair that reports to the board. This is a one year term with automatic ascension to president and immediate past president (3 years total). Dr. Margie Scherk currently serves as President-Elect.

Directors: Directors serve a term of two (2) years with a limit of three consecutive terms. Directors should represent the diversity of companion animal/feline practice and must be willing to attend board meetings, the two conferences, and to oversee the work of committees.

In accordance with the AAFP's policies and procedures, members may submit names of additional candidates, along with biographical information and supporting signatures equal to 1% of the membership (currently, 17 signatures are required) to: info@aafponline.org
by Tuesday, August 22, 2006. You may nominate yourself or any member in good standing. Biography forms are available from the Executive Director's office at the above email address.

IN THE NEWS

Below is a sampling of new laws recently adopted throughout the country.

Hawaii legislation was enacted to direct the Director of Civil Defense and local organizations operating emergency shelters to make an area available to shelter domestic pets.

Maryland Gov. Ehrlich signed a bill to prohibit the possession or breeding of specified exotic animals, with certain exemptions.

New Hampshire legislation authorizes the appropriate state agency to prepare a plan for service animals to be evacuated in the event of an emergency, and specifies that such animals may not be separated from the persons they serve.

A judge in Oregon dismissed a large part of a $1.6 million lawsuit that is bringing national attention to the emotional issue of determining the value of family pets. The claim of loss of companionship was not allowed against a man convicted of intentionally running over his neighbor's dog. The judge allowed the jury to consider awarding punitive damages and compensation for the intentional infliction of emotional stress, but said that loss of animal companionship was not a viable theory under Oregon law.

Rhode Island became the first state to mandate that cats over six months old must be spayed or neutered. The legislation is intended to save thousands of cats from being euthanized each year and ease crowding in animal shelters.

South Carolina enacted a major revision of its veterinary practice act. The legislation makes client complaints public and establishes standards for emergency care and mobile facilities. It also specifies how veterinarians may delegate the performance of procedures, therapeutic options, and alternate therapies, requiring veterinarians to verify qualifications and competency, while remaining responsible for the general care of the patient.

Vermont became the second state to allow judges to issue protective orders for pets of people trying to get out of abusive relationships. Other states are expected to pass this type of legislation in the future.

The AAFP and Fort Dodge Animal Health have again teamed up to help you spread the message of feline wellness. The new "Healthy Cats for Life" campaign will help educate cat owners about the importance of twice-a-year veterinary exams and recognizing the subtle signs of sickness. Clinic kits will be distributed to AAFP members and selected National Pet Wellness Month registrants. This program is a continuation of the cat wellness program launched in 2005, "The Great Cat Watch, for Wellness Sake!". AVMA NEWS

Disaster planning for pets moves forward

Hoping to avoid another Katrina-like debacle, lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and around the country are working toward requiring the inclusion of pets in emergency-preparedness plans.

In May, the House passed the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act with overwhelming bipartisan support. The PETS bill, introduced by Rep. Tom Lantos of California, would require state and local preparedness offices to take into account pet owners, household pets, and service animals in their disaster preparedness program.

The PETS bill is a critically important piece of legislation, according to the AVMA, since many Gulf Coast residents would not evacuate because there was nowhere to go that would accept people and their pets. Federal disaster relief organizations prevent animals from boarding rescue vehicles. The Red Cross bars all animals, except for service animals, from evacuee shelters for reasons of public health and safety.

The Senate is considering similar legislation. Sponsored by Ted Stevens of Alaska and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, the Senate bill goes further than the House version by authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist in the planning process, allowing financial aid to create emergency shelters for pet owners, and requiring the provision of essential assistance for pet owners and their animals following a major disaster.

Efforts to make provisions for pets and livestock during emergencies are also under way in several states. Such legislation has been adopted in Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Florida, while bills are currently pending in California, New Jersey and New York.
